Mexico Girls Trip Packing List – Swimming, Beaches, and Dancing in Baja Sur

Hey I’m Lexi, and I run group trips for women (called Solo Girls Trips) to some of my favorite places on earth—like Baja Sur, Mexico.

This is the official packing list for the girls joining me on our upcoming 5-night girls trip around Baja Sur to swim with whale sharks and sea lions.

If you’re on the trip, read this closely (yes, I’m looking at you with the oversized suitcase).

And if you’re not coming this time but planning your own trip to Baja Sur, feel free to follow this list too—our itinerary includes beaches, snorkeling, boating, city exploring, and a night camping under the stars on Isla Espíritu Santo.

I’ve tailored this packing guide specifically for solo female travelers who want to be prepared, comfortable, and ready for anything Baja throws their way—from sunscreen to swimsuits to the right bag to carry it all.

What NOT to bring...

We’re doing a lot on this trip—swimming in turquoise coves, dancing in La Paz, exploring beach towns, camping in a protected wildlife sanctuary—so you want to pack smart. But just as important as what to bring is knowing what not to bring. Here’s what to leave out of your bag:

  • Drugs of any kind—including marijuana or mushrooms

Contrary to popular belief, weed is not legal to carry into Mexico (even if you bought it “legally” elsewhere), and psychedelics are definitely illegal. Please do not bring any controlled substances, period.

  • Heavy roller suitcases or hard-shell luggage

You’ll be responsible for carrying your own bag through docks, boats, dirt paths, and vans. Make it easy on yourself and bring a backpack or soft duffel instead.

  • Toxic or non–reef-safe sunscreen

We’ll be swimming in a protected marine sanctuary full of delicate coral, sea turtles, and fish. Chemical sunscreens harm ocean life. Please bring reef-safe SPF only.

  • High heels or any uncomfortable shoes

We’ll be walking, dancing, and exploring uneven terrain. Bring shoes you can move in. Sandals with grip or sneakers for dancing are perfect.

  • Jewelry or anything valuable you’d be upset to lose

We’ll be on boats, beaches, and bumpy roads—this isn’t the trip for sentimental or flashy items.

  • Bulky towels or beauty products you won’t use

You don’t need a full-size blow dryer or three kinds of lotion. Plan on braids and cute hats!

  • What about laptops?
I plan to bring mine in case I need to do a little work. It will live in this padded laptop sleeve with handle inside my Vera Bradley Tote.

✧ What BAG To Use?

We’re traveling around the whole Baja Sur peninsula – so an easy bag is key.

Our group will travel from the airport to Todos Santos to La Paz, camping on Isla Espíritu Santo, and ending in San José del Cabo.

This Baja Sur trip includes boats, vans, sandy beaches, and a lot of in-and-out travel days. Packing light will make your life so much easier. Trust me.

Good bag

✅ No bigger than 55L

✅ Easy to pack and move

✅ Easy to carry over the sand

Bad bag

❌ Bigger than 60L

❌ Luggage with wheels.

❌ Luggage you can’t personally carry.

Here are some of my bag recommendations…

▸ Best Osprey Backpack
I have this backpack in both the 40L and the 55L. I have been exclusively using these travel backpacks for a decade.

What to Bring For Todos Santos

Solo Girl's Travel Guide logo

Here’s the itinerary for our first two nights in Todos Santos.

We will be staying at a stunning hotel overlooking the ocean with a pool.

Day one, we will hang by the pool and have a private dinner at the house.
Day two is a taco tour and a night out (for dancing, cocktails, whatever).

✨ Bring a swimsuit for the pool.
✨ Bring walking sandals for the taco tour.
✨ Bring one “going out” dress.

I’ll talk more about swimsuits later…

What to Bring For Glamping & Snorkeling

Night 3 and 4, we are glamping on the beach of Camp Cecil!

You’ll need:

✨ Active swim + beach wear
✨ Cozy clothing for beachy evenings

✨Waterproof bag for the boat

✨Skincare, haircare and SPF

INSIDE THE BAG:

What to bring on the raft: sunscreen, chapstick, water, a towel.

If you bring your phone on the raft (rather than leaving it in your luggage which is carried to the next beach by our gear boats)., make sure it’s secured in a waterproof pouch that floats.

What not to bring on the raft: bulky towels, big backpacks, snacks (you will be fed plenty!), chairs, politics.

✧ Boat Bags

Be prepared for a day of snorkeling by getting a small, secure bag for the boat.

  • For your phone + extras – get a secure bag like the ones below.
  • Then I use a tote bag or drawstring backpack to carry my sunscreen, towel and water.

Sun Bum Sunscreen

Make sure your sunscreen is eco-friendly SPF for the marine sanctuary. We don’t want to poison the whales.

✧ SPF Chapstick & Powder

For Your Lips: Bring a lip treatment for day and a heavier lip treatment for the night.

For the Face: I take this SPF SuperGoop Powder on the raft and reapply throughout the day (and use it on my scalp)! – Get it here ➙

✧ Trip Insurance

Remember that when coming on my trips, Travel Insurance in mandatory.

If you book your trip with a travel credit card like the Capital Venture One X, then you’ve got trip cancellation insurance already.

I recommend travel insurance that covers medical and trip cancellation – like  World Nomads.

✧ Secure Footwear

We’ll be walking in town and on the beach, bring two pairs of shoes.

Walking Sandals

Clothing for Camp

We’re sleeping in these gorgeous glamping tents right near the shore!

Getting back to camp, it feels so good to change into comfy clothes after being wet all day. At camp, we will swim in the river, explore the woods (hopefully forage for mushrooms), hang on the beach, and navigate to the bathroom in the dark at night…

I’ve traveled the world and river rafting in the USA is in my “top 3 favorite adventures ever’ list. You haven’t lived until you’ve been whitewater rafting off the grid for a week!

Ps. I’m afraid of everything – and this river trip is the perfect way to get outside your comfort zone while staying extremely safe. And if you’re still afraid, know that the minimum age for this trip is 7 years old. I’ll let that speak for itself in terms of safety…
