The Ultimate Baja Mexico Packing List for Women

mobula ray in mexico

Hey I’m Lexi, and I run group trips for women (called Solo Girls Trips) to some of my favorite places on earth—like Baja Sur, Mexico.

This is the official packing list for the girls joining me on our upcoming 7-day girls trip to Baja Sur.

This is the official packing list for the girls joining me — but whether you’re on this trip or planning your own solo female travel adventure in Baja, this guide has you covered.

Our itinerary covers beach days in La Ventana, snorkeling with manta rays, and camping under the stars for 3 days.

So I’ve built this women’s packing guide to keep you prepared, comfortable, and ready for anything Baja throws your way, from sunscreen to swimsuits to the right bag to carry it all.

What I'm Packing for Mexico:

For La Ventana (the beach town)

Our first and last night will be spent here.

For Beach Camping

We’ll be spending 3 nights on isolated beaches!

For Travel Days

  • Comfy Pants and Top

Below, I’ll include MORE links to my favorite gear for this Mexico trip.

What NOT to bring...

We’re doing a lot on this trip. Swimming in turquoise coves, dancing in La Ventana, exploring beach towns, and camping in a protected wildlife sanctuary where you might spot sea lions, whale sharks, and manta rays. So you want to pack smart for Baja California Sur. But just as important as what to bring to Mexico is knowing what not to bring.

  • Drugs of any kind—including marijuana or mushrooms

Contrary to popular belief, weed is not legal to carry into Mexico, even if you bought it “legally” elsewhere. Psychedelics are definitely illegal. Please do not bring any controlled substances, period. .

  • Heavy roller suitcases or hard-shell luggage

You’ll be responsible for carrying your own bag through docks, boats, dirt paths, and vans. Make it easy on yourself and bring a backpack or soft duffel instead. Trust me, the best luggage for a Baja Sur trip is something lightweight and flexible.

  • Toxic or non–reef-safe sunscreen

We’ll be snorkeling in a protected marine sanctuary with coral, sea turtles, and tropical fish. Chemical sunscreens destroy ocean ecosystems. Reef-safe SPF only, please.

  • High heels or any uncomfortable shoes

Uneven terrain, sandy paths, late night beach walks. Bring shoes you can actually move in. Grippy sandals like Tevas or lightweight sneakers are your best bet

  • Jewelry or anything valuable you’d be upset to lose

We’ll be on boats, beaches, and bumpy roads—this isn’t the trip for sentimental or flashy items.

  • Bulky towels or beauty products you won’t use

You don’t need a full-size blow dryer or three kinds of lotion. Plan on braids and cute hats!

  • What about laptops?
I plan to bring mine in case I need to do a little work. It will live in this padded laptop sleeve with handle inside my Vera Bradley Tote.

✧ What BAG To Use?

You want a small bag that is easy to carry on boats and beaches.

YES you can leave a bigger bag at our hotel in La Ventana – but you need a bag like the ones below for camping.

Good bag

✅ No bigger than 40L

✅ Easy to pack and move

✅ Easy to carry over the sand

Bad bag

❌ Bigger than 40L

❌ Luggage with wheels.

❌ Luggage you can’t personally carry.

Here are some of my bag recommendations…

▸ Best Osprey Backpack
I have been exclusively using these Osprey travel backpacks for a decade. I love the Daylite™ Carry-On Travel Pack 35L

▸ Cheap Weekender Bag
I’ve been taking this bag on off-grid trips for about a year. It has a waterproof pocket to keep your passport!

PRO TIP: Don’t Use Compression Bags
Its best to roll your clothes and use the pockets inside your bag.

Solo Girl's Travel Guide logo

Here’s the itinerary for our first and last night:

First night – we will be hanging by the pool and going to beach bards for drinks.

Last night – we will return from camping, get dressed up and go to a final goodbye dinner.

✨ Bring a swimsuit for the pool.
✨ I’ll just wear my Tevas for the beach.
✨ Bring one chill beachy outfit/cover-up (idea here).

I’ll talk more about swimsuits later…

What to Bring For Beach Camping & Snorkeling

Night 2-5 we are camping on an off-grid beach. Swimming during the day, chilling at night.

You’ll need:

✨ Active swim + beach wear for the day
✨ Cozy clothing for chilly evenings

✨Waterproof dry bag for the boat (10-20L)

✨Skincare, haircare and SPF

✧ Boat Bags

Be prepared for a day of snorkeling by getting a small, secure dry bag for the boat.

  • Inside, you’ll put sunscreen, snacks, and your towel.
  • For your phone + extras – get a secure bag like the ones below.

For the Face: I take this SPF SuperGoop Powder on the raft and reapply throughout the day (and use it on my scalp)! – Get it here ➙

✧ Trip Insurance

Remember that when coming on my trips, Travel Insurance in mandatory.

If you book your trip with a travel credit card like the Capital Venture One X, then you’ve got trip cancellation insurance already.

Baja California Sur is the kind of trip that rewards you for packing light and showing up ready. Every item on this list earned its spot because I’ve learned the hard way what works and what doesn’t. Trust the list, ditch the oversized suitcase, and save your energy for the stuff that actually matters. Like the ocean, the sunsets, and the stories you’ll be telling for years.
